Walt joined Duke in September 2016 after retiring from a career in geotechnical and environmental engineering where he served as the Director of Technical Services for a Raleigh consulting firm. 

During his career, Walt completed field assignments in North Carolina, across the US, and in Japan.  Service sectors included military, energy, industrial, municipal, chemical and pharmaceutical clients among others. 

Projects ranged from water resource studies, solid waste landfill siting and assessment studies, groundwater hydrology and contaminant transport studies, subsurface injection programs, well construction and abandonment; design, construction, and deployment of soil and groundwater remediation systems, field instrumentation, drilling equipment fabrication, and high pressure homogenization of emulsions.

Walt brings a wealth of field experience to the team particularly in the realm of pumps and pumping strategies, equipment fabrication, maintenance, and field deployment.

Walt is also part of the team at NC State University designing and fabricating equipment for emptying pit latrines in developing countries.  Prototypes are currently undergoing testing in South Africa, India and Malawi.
